RIDGID Expands Diagnostic Equipment Lineup
New hand-held diagnostic equipment includes LM-100 laser distance meter, CD-100 combustible gas detector and IR-100 infrared thermometer.
RIDGID expands its existing diagnostic line with the addition of three new hand-held diagnostic tools: the RIDGID micro LM-100 laser distance meter, the RIDGID micro CD-100 combustible gas detector and the RIDGID micro IR-100 non-contact infrared thermometer.
The RIDGID micro LM-100 laser distance meter provides simple, quick and accurate distance readings up to 164 feet. Direct and indirect measurements can be taken in seconds with the meter. The device's ultra-sharp class II laser allows for easy measurement of remote, hard-to-reach places. Distance readings appear quickly on the easy-to-read LCD display, and the meter displays the last three measurements and stores the last 20 measurements.
The rugged, portable, compact device weighs 0.5 pounds and measures accurately within 1/16 of an inch. It offers adjustable units enabling the user to read the measurements in feet, inches or meters and add or subtract measurements at the touch of a button. The bright backlit display allows the user to use the device in poorly lit areas. The instrument enables professional tradesmen to quickly determine distances for a range of applications, i.e. bidding for distance of piping run, measuring trouble spots on lines and quickly determining spacing, and area measurements for volume and code compliance.

The rugged ergonomic design makes the device capable of withstanding jobsite rigor. The adjustable sensitivity settings allow for quick, precise leak locating even in low-levels and the Tri-Mode Detection gives the operator the flexibility to be alerted with a visual, audible or vibration alert, which can be adjusted for each environment. The RIDGID micro IR-100 non-contact infrared thermometer provides simple, quick and accurate surface temperature readings at the push of a button. By squeezing the trigger and pointing the ultra-sharp dual class II lasers to spotlight the surface being measured, the micro IR-100 thermometer provides an immediate temperature measurement on a clear, easy-to-read backlit LCD display. The rugged ergonomic pistol-style grip allows the user to keep a solid grip on the device in the harshest industrial environments.
The 20-to-1 distance-to-spot ratio allows the user to take more accurate measurements from farther distances. Audible and visual high and low alarm settings alert the user quickly to temperatures outside of the set ranges. The micro IR-100 thermometer has a large temperature measuring range of -58 degrees to 1472 degrees Fahrenheit. Painter's Pyramid with Lock & Tab System

Transcube Lift-Safe Transportable Fuel Tanks
In response to specific customer requests for equipment meeting stringent OSHA jobsite regulations, Transcube has introduced a newly engineered 5:1 lift safety factor to its line of transportable diesel fuel tanks. The new safety factor gives each tank's corner lifting lugs the capability to lift five times the fully loaded weight of a tank.
The new lift safety factor is an optional feature on Transcube's 05TCG, 10TCG and 20TCG models, which offer storage capacities of 132, 264 and 528 gallons, respectively. The tanks are designed with an inner fuel container and an outer wall that provides 110-percent integral secondary containment to eliminate the risk of spills and ground contamination, making them ideal for equipment and power rental fleets, fuel suppliers and end users working in construction, mining, agricultural and offshore applications.
The tanks are equipped to make handling and maneuverability simple regardless of jobsite logistics. Transcube's standard four-corner lifting eyes allow a tank to be lifted, raised or lowered by a crane while full of fuel, while the new lift safety factor provides the added safety assurance of heavy-duty lifting lugs that can lift fives times the weight of a fully loaded tank. The tanks also feature forklift pockets that are accessible on all four sides.
Internally baffled to prevent the surge of fuel during transport, Transcube tanks are UL 142 certified and have DOT approval for transportation of diesel fuel, unlike traditional fuel tanks that are not designed for traveling on the road. This gives the units the versatility to be deployed to remote locations while full of fuel and the ability to be taken from a site with fuel still inside.
All fill ports, pumps, fittings and connections are housed at the top of the tank within the secondary containment area. To eliminate the risk of accidental spillage, the tanks have no bottom or side exterior outlets of any kind.

Sokkia ultra-compact SHC25 and SHC25A data collectors
Sokkia Corporation has added two new models to its data collector lineup to expand users' choices.
"The new SHC25 series is not only an affordable choice, but also features superior portability, ruggedness and ease of use in the field," said Brice Walker, vice president of survey sales.
The SHC25/25A weighs 11.3 oz (320g) including battery, and measures 3.23 x 5.75 x 1.30 in. (82 x 146 x 33mm). "The SHC25 series is the lightest and smallest data collector available on today's market which meets the US military standard that withstands extremely rough conditions," Walker said. "Conforming to the latest MIL-STD-810G, both models have cleared the drop tests from a height of 5 ft. (1.52m). These models are also rated to IP65 of the IEC standard, eliminating powder dust and driving rain as potential problems."
Each model integrates the 20-channel L1 GPS receiver that provides point positioning accuracy of 5 meters (16.4 ft.) and DGPS accuracy of 1 to 3 meters (3.3 to 9.9 ft.) using SBAS signals. "In addition, the SHC25A model includes built-in 3 MP auto focus camera, electronic compass and altimeter to meet the increasing demand for GIS data collection capability," Walker said.

The SHC25 series features the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system, 533MHz processor, and 256MB SDRAM. Sokkia's comprehensive data collection software Spectrum Survey Field, as well as the construction layout software Sokkia Layout Field, fully runs on the SHC25/25A, "meaning that these data collectors have abilities to control all Sokkia GPS/GNSS receivers, total stations and digital levels," Walker said.
"Sokkia now offers four choices. The SHC250 model features the ultra-fast 806MHz processor, while the SHC2500 offers quick data entry with a full alphanumeric keyboard.
"If users prefer the compact size, lightweight or cost effectiveness, we recommend the new SHC25. The new SHC25A satisfies GIS data collection demands in addition to the SHC25 functionality. All of our data collectors provide superior environmental protection, including IP65 or higher dust/water protections that ensure maximum data security," Walker said.

A Crash Course on Building Moisture Control
What is a weather resistive barrier (WRB)?
Weather resistive barriers are part of exterior wall systems designed to protect building materials from moisture penetration. Moisture can penetrate through a variety of places including cladding joints, and weather resistive barriers act as a secondary weather protection assembly. High performing permeable weather resistive barriers allow moisture vapor to escape and can resist air movement while ensuring building materials to remain dry and weather tight, increasing building performance, decreasing maintenance costs and reducing the risk of moisture-related problems such as mold, mildew, rot and sick building syndrome.
Is mold, mildew and rot a problem in buildings?
The North American building industry spends around $9 billion each year repairing and litigating damages from water and moisture. Risk management companies note that new materials used in building construction over the last 20 years were energy-efficient, but ventilation poor, resulting in toxic mold claims of over $3 billion. Air leakage can result in increased energy use of up to 30-40% in heating climates and 10-15% in cooling climates.
What is a perm?
A unit of water vapor transmission defined as 1 grain of water vapor per square foot per hour per inch of mercury pressure difference (1 inch mercury = 0.49 psi). Metric unit of measure is ng/m2 s Pa. 1 perm = 55 ng/m2 s Pa.
What is permeability?
The time rate of water vapor transmission through unit area of a material of unit thickness induced by unit vapor pressure difference between two specific surfaces, under specified temperature and humidity conditions.
Why should I care about perms and permeability?
Proper building envelope design promotes continual drying by allowing vapor to escape. Moisture can penetrate a building envelope through materials and rain/snow exposure during construction. General occupancy also adds to the moisture levels. Trapped moisture can cause wood rot, swelling and distortion of lumber, corrosion of metal and reduction of insulation thermal value. Any or all of these issues result in a high risk of mold, mildew, building deterioration, poor indoor air quality and health and safety risks to occupant's increases. In some states, new air tightness and energy saving requirements increase the possibility of trapped moisture, when low or non-permeable air barriers are utilized.
Membranes with a higher perm value greater than 20 reduce the risk of condensation and promote escape of moisture through the building envelope. Additionally, membranes with a high perm value can help building materials "dry-out" during the construction phase.
Simply put, when you wear a traditional rain slicker (1 perm) outside, you perspire because the moisture your body is making cannot escape.
On the flip side, if you went outside with a high perm slicker lined with something like Goretex®, the moisture in your body can escape because the Goretex lining allows your body to "breathe."
