Rectorseal Smoke and Acoustic Sealant
Rectorseal introduces a new Smoke and Acoustic Sealant for use in smoke and sound rated assemblies. This acrylic, latex sealant provides a seal for penetrations and membrane openings, and allows for static or dynamic movement.
Changes to the building code have increased the requirement for Smoke Partition Wall Assemblies, which are designed to restrict the movement of smoke within a building. All joints and through penetrations are now required to have a low air leakage rate (L-rating) in these smoke partitions. Through excessive testing RectorSeal has developed a Smoke and Acoustic Sealant to maintain the smoke characteristics as required by the changes to the codes.
RectorSeal Smoke and Acoustic Sealant provides excellent sound attenuation characteristics in accordance with ASTM E90, and reduces the movement of smoke and airborne particles as demonstrated in air leakage testing modified UL 1479 and modified UL 2079. RectorSeal Smoke and Acoustic Sealant is available in Caulk and Spray grade and is easily applied by caulking gun, trowel, spray or brush and cleans up with soap and water. RectorSeal Smoke and Acoustic Sealant is used in vertical and horizontal non-fire rated assemblies to prevent the passage of smoke and sound.
RectorSeal Smoke and Acoustic Sealant has been tested in accordance to the following standards: ASTM E84, ASTM E90, ASTM E1399, and tested for air leakage in accordance to modified UL 1479 and modified UL 2079. PROvantage VOC-compliant solvent-based adhesives
Franklin International's new PROvantage line of VOC-compliant solvent-based adhesives now includes the industry's first-ever solvent-based adhesives that do not etch foamboard and plastic tub surrounds.
The new PROvantage line of construction adhesives stands out as the industry's first full line of VOC-compliant, solvent-based construction adhesives. The line includes eight adhesives that, together, meet the range of bonding applications on the construction site and at home.
Three of the eight adhesives are first-of-their-kind – the first VOC-compliant, solvent-based adhesives developed specifically for use on wood, foamboard and tub surrounds. The formulas for foamboard and tub surrounds merit special note: as the first-ever solvent-based adhesives that do not "etch" foamboard and plastic tub surrounds, they represent a giant technological leap in the adhesives industry.
"Typical solvents used in adhesives tend to damage plastic tub surrounds and foamboard," explains Franklin marketing director Craig Stone. "But PROvantage is not your conventional solvent-based adhesive. Its highly unique, propriety formulation makes it safe for use with these substrates – and for the environment. At the same time, it delivers all of the preferred performance characteristics of conventional solvent-based adhesives, such as fast-grab, cold-weather extrusion and consistent cure time."
PROvantage adhesives offer a VOC content of less than 50 g/L and meet even the strictest state, regional or federal VOC regulations. They also rely substantially less on oil derivatives. This, and the unique technology and proprietary manufacturing processes behind PROvantage, enable Franklin to reduce production costs – and save contractors 10 percent or more on the typical cost of VOC-compliant, solvent-based construction adhesives.
Titebond PROvantage construction adhesives are available in 28-ounce cartridges; some also are available in 10-ounce cartridges. More information on PROvantage products and distributors is available at www.Titebond.com/Provantage or through Franklin Technical Service at (800) 877-4583.

Fomo polyurethane foam insulation
A major challenge in existing homes is air infiltration – a problem that can appear in multiple areas of a home, including the attic, rim joist and crawlspace. Using polyurethane foam to seal these critical areas is one the most cost-effective and easy solutions to stop air infiltration.
Traditional air sealing methods can be costly and require extensive time to apply. Using a polyurethane foam, such as Fomo Products, Inc.’s Handi-Family product line, creates an effective barrier in a fraction of time and cost. For instance, one can of Handi-Foam yields the same amount of air sealing material as 30 standard tubes of caulk, and it’s simple to install.
“Some air sealing methods can be messy and hard to maneuver, especially in tight spaces like attics and crawlspaces,” said Sara Jonas, senior manager – marketing, Fomo Products. “Using Handi-Foam makes the job go a lot smoother in a lot less time because it’s easy to use, extremely portable and doesn’t require additional materials or tools.”
From top to bottom
Existing homes typically have multiple air infiltration points, from the attic down to the basement. Closed cell foam is the best option when air sealing because it will also act as a vapor retarder, assisting with another common problems in existing homes that can lead to mold.
Attics
Vented attics are the best environment for employing air sealing methods with polyurethane foam, as they usually contain several spots of air and moisture penetration. These problem-areas include junction boxes, can lights, pipe penetrations and drywall-to-wood connections.
A quick flash of spray polyurethane foam (approximately ½ inch thick) will seal around these areas. When used in conjunction with traditional insulation methods, such as blown-in cellulose or fiberglass, this small amount of foam will stop air infiltration while maintaining the R-value designated by building codes.
Rim Joists
Rim joists are another common spot for air and moisture infiltration. Traditionally rim joists have been insulated with fiberglass, which can lead to mold problems when exposed to the elements and doesn’t stop air infiltration. Removing the existing fiberglass and spraying a flash of spray foam (approximately one-half to three inches thick) around the rim joist will create an airtight seal. The fiberglass can be placed over the foam to further insulate.
Crawlspaces
Crawlspaces can be a major contributor of moisture in a home, as well as cause “cold spots” in the floor. Spray polyurethane foam is one of the easiest ways to insulate these hard-to-reach areas. Most crawlspace retrofits can be completed with one laborer in less than a few hours when using a spray foam kit.
“Crawlspaces, rim joists and attics are three of the most important places to look at when you’re remodeling an existing home with energy concerns,” Jonas said. “We’ve seen homes reach up to 30 percent savings on their annual energy bill after utilizing just one of these applications. It’s a significant impact for the homeowner and a value added offering for the contractor.”
DAP 3.0 Advanced All-Purpose Sealant
New DAP 3.0 Advanced All-Purpose Sealant is specially formulated with Kwik Dry Technology, allowing it to be exposed to water after just three hours without washing out; other caulks and sealants may require a 24-36 hour waiting period before exposing to water.
And for outdoor applications, it can be applied in extreme weather and temperature conditions (-35°F to 140°F). Both DIYers and contractors alike can save time and money by finishing the job faster and reducing the chance for errors.
Prospec moisture vapor reducer
ProSpec from Bonsal American expands its line of flooring repair products with the Moisture Vapor Reducer (MVR).
It lowers the moisture vapor transmission rate of a concrete substrate by up to 80 percent, taking a substrate that emits 15 pounds of moisture per 1,000 square feet in 24 hours to less than 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet in 24 hours.
