Rockler launches gift-making season with classes

"Make and Take" project classes will be offered at Rockler stores and online.

To help holiday gift makers get an early start, Rockler Woodworking and Hardware is offering hands-on project kits and classes throughout October in which participants can learn basic woodworking skills while handcrafting items they'll be proud to wrap up.

Projects include a custom knife; an ice cream scoop, pizza cutter or bottle opener; a wooden beverage caddy; and a decorative wooden luminary. Participants can sign up for any or all of the classes, and they'll leave with a completed project. Plans, overview videos and materials also will be available online for those who want to make the projects on their own.

"Fall is project time for many woodworkers and makers," said Scott Ekman, Rockler's vice president of marketing. "With the holidays around the corner, we wanted to give some creative ideas and inspiration to help jump-start the gift-making season."

All Rockler stores will offer the “make-and-take” classes, and a different project is scheduled for each week. Class size will be limited from three to six participants, so lots of one-on-one help will be available.

Each class will last 2 to 3 hours and will focus on a single project. In the knife-making class, they’ll mount, shape and finish a custom wood handle/grip on a knife kit. In the ice cream scoop/pizza cutter/bottle opener class, they’ll turn and finish a custom wood handle on the lathe and mount it to the hardware kit of their choice. In the beverage caddy class, they’ll build a handled carrier with spots for a six-pack and a bottle opener mounted to the side. In the luminary class, they’ll learn joinery and scroll-saw techniques while they make a wooden luminary with decorative cutouts.

The cost of the ice cream scoop/pizza cutter/bottle opener class is $25 plus the price of the desired hardware kit; the cost for the other classes is $35, including materials. More details and links to register for local classes are available at www.rockler.com/makeandtake.
