Western Equipment Reports Strongest Mid-year Sales in Five Years

Prowler truck-mounted hydraulic forklift sales soar 250% year-over-year.

Western Equipment Manufacturing, Inc., maker of truck-mounted forklifts commonly found on construction sites of varying size and scope, announced today it has recorded its strongest mid-year sales figures since the start of the economic recovery, a period of nearly five years.

Year-to-date sales for The Prowler, a truck-mounted, electronically controlled hydraulic forklift, soared 250% year-over-year. Western has not seen such strong demand for its flagship product since well before the recession.

"Our impressive mid-year sales figures is just one of the many signs that point to a more stable and less volatile U.S. economy," said Darren Dyck, general manager of the Southern California-based business. "The hallmark of this start-and-stop recovery has seen one sector perform well, while another one backpedals. We might have finally moved passed this phase. I think more businesses, particularly in the construction industry, are starting to see pre-recession type growth."

Dyck, who has helped manage the company for the better part of 15 years, fully expects growth to continue at this break-neck pace due to Western's expansion into new national and foreign markets.

"We think this is just the beginning," Dyck added. "We are projecting a historical increase in demand going forward."

Western is poised to capitalize on this opportunity because it is a vertically integrated company, which means its product lead times are much shorter than its competition. This allows Western to meet projected demand much more efficiently and quicker than the rest.

Additionally, part of the optimism rests in the trends that Dyck observed during the recession and the subsequent slow-pace recovery.

"Every industry put off capital investments during this dark economic period," Dyck said. "Instead of purchasing new equipment, companies were servicing older models. This helped us through the slow purchase cycle because we supply all the parts and labor for The Prowler. Our sales numbers decreased, but orders for parts and service were exceptionally strong.

"Now we are seeing it in reverse. By delaying purchases, businesses created pent-up demand and they are finally beginning to replace aging models. We strongly believe this trend is a byproduct of a more robust economic recovery."
